Kurlette subwoofer
Legend's Kurlette subwoofer adds powerful, deep yet tightly controlled bass to any home theatre system producing extra excitement and drama for the enjoyment of your movies. It combines especially well with the famous fast open sound other Legend loudspeakers in our home theatre systems and is part of Legend's Mob 1 system that was recently awarded the 2006 AV Home Theatre Speaker System Award - for the full review please click here . In addition it will complement superbly the bass of hi-fi stereo speakers.
The Kurlette is based on the legendary Kurlo subwoofer. Like its bigger brother, the Kurlette uses a sealed cabinet for improved speed and transient response. We have added a small amount of electronic equalisation so that the frequency response is flat to below 30 Hz below which it has been rolled of rapidly to avoid cone damage. At the top end, the frequency response can be rolled off from 50 - 150 Hz at -12 dB/octave.
The Kurlette's cabinets are very solidly built to minimise secondary vibrations that can muddle the sound. We use 18mm MDF on the side and back panel and 40 mm of MDF on the front panel. Cabinet strength is further increased by extensive asymmetric bracing; and damping is increased by addition of constrained-layer damping. Sound waves inside the cabinet are dispersed by a proprietary technique and absorbed by Australian wool.
The Kurlette uses a 10" (25cm) extra-long throw Scandinavian bass-driver. It has a very large voice-coil and huge 3 Kg magnet to give a linear cone excursion of 20mm. This makes it equivalent to a 12" unit having a normal excursion of 6-8mm.
In the Kurlette II, the built-in power has been increased from 150 W to 250W giving huge reserves of power for the long-throw drive unit, allowing it to reproduce the deepest movie sounds and musical notes with superb ease. The amplifier can be connected either directly to your processor or pre-amp (at line level) or to a pair of speaker outputs from your main amplifier. Its controls include variable volume and upper frequency control; phase switching; and optional automatic power-up mode. In addition, the controls can now be by-passed to LFE mode so that you can control the amplifier directly from your receiver or processor.
Gavin Womersley enthused in his review in AVL magazine "There are now a great many subwoofer choices at $999 but the Legend Kurlette 11 has the tightest bass of any that I've tested so far. And although it does not play quite as loudly as some, it has guts aplenty and goes very deep for such a small subwoofer. It will be just the ticket for smaller rooms. Many people will appreciate the Kurlette 11s modest footprint and a bass performance which is out of all proportion to its size."
