Legend’s Kurlette subwoofer adds powerful, deep yet tightly controlled bass to any home theatre system producing extra excitement and drama for the enjoyment of your movies. It combines especially well with the famous fast open sound other Legend loudspeakers in home theatre systems. In addition it superbly complements stereo speakers for music.
The Kurlettes are based on the legendary Kurlo subwoofer. Like its bigger brother, the Kurlette uses a sealed cabinet for improved speed and transient response. We have added a small amount of electronic equalisation so that the frequency response is flat to below 30 Hz after which is then rolled of rapidly to avoid cone damage. At the top end, the frequency response can be variably rolled off at -12 dB/octave from 50 – 150 Hz to join with other speakers in your system.
Their cabinets are very solidly built to minimise secondary vibrations that can muddle the sound. We use 18mm MDF on the side and back panel and 40 mm of MDF on the front panel. Cabinet strength is further increased by extensive asymmetric bracing; while sound waves inside the cabinet are absorbed by foam and wool batts.
The Kurlettes employ a 10″ (25cm) long throw Scandinavian bass-driver for deep powerful bass. It has a large voice-coil and huge magnet to give a cone excursion of 20mm. This makes it equivalent to a 12″ unit having a normal excursion of 6-8mm.
To give huge reserves of power for this long-throw drive unit, we have built-in a new 300W RMS class H amplifier so that the deepest movie sounds and musical notes are reproduced with superb ease. These amps combine the advantages of the harmonic richness & low distortion of a class A/B output stage with low heat dissipation. And their switch-mode power supply gives very rapid (over 100kHz) charging up of the amplifier supply rails keeping their voltage very constant so contributing to the Kurlette’s speed & tautness. Further these amps have proven very reliable even under the most demanding conditions.
